Band at Glenwood
In the past twenty-seven years cooperative efforts with the Arts Council and Conejo Park and Recreation have sponsored instrumental music programs to enrich the lives of your children. Instrumental music can enhance your child’s educational experience through creative self-expression, emotional release and satisfaction, discipline of achievement, cooperating and performing with fellow students. Musicians will perform throughout the year with a final performance at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.
Band at Glenwood is available to students in 4th and 5th grade at both the beginning and advanced (more than 9 months) levels. We are fortunate to have Mr. Jim Parkinson as our band director this year. Mr. Parkinson started playing clarinet in 5th grade, and graduated from the band programs at Madroña Elementary, Redwood Intermediate, and Thousand Oaks High School. He then went on to study music at Arizona State University, where he was awarded a full scholarship and received a Bachelors of Music Degree in Music Education in 2002. After working for four years in leadership positions at Whole Foods Market, Mr. Parkinson returned to music in 2006, when he got accepted into the Graduate Music Program at California State University, Northridge where he is currently pursuing a Masters of Music Degree in Clarinet Performance.
Since returning to music in 2006, Mr. Parkinson has been appointed Principal Clarinet after every audition he has taken, including all auditions for the CSUN Wind Ensemble, the CSUN Symphony Orchestra, the 2007 International Clarinet Association College Clarinet Choir, and the 2007 Idyllwild Festival Wind Ensemble. In 2007-08, Mr. Parkinson performed in Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles with both the CSUN Wind Ensemble and the Idyllwild Festival Wind Ensemble. Also in 2008, he was awarded Outstanding Student of the CSUN Wind Ensemble, and was a winner of the 2008 CSUN Concerto Competition.
This will be Mr. Parkinson's third year teaching elementary school band in the Conejo Valley, and he is very excited to be starting at Glenwood this year!
