As 5th grade teachers, we are dedicated to providing a wonderful and unique 5th grade experience for all of our students. The classes are leveled to insure the best learning environment for all. This is a flexible grouping and will change according to each student's aptitude.
The students master the rules of grammar and spelling structure through daily grammar and vocabulary practice. They also complete at least one hour of Success Maker a week. This is a computer program that tutors and brings each student along at his/her own level. This is a great program that supports the curriculum presented in class.
The writing program allows each student to express his/herself in a variety of ways using many different formats, usually beginning with a graphic organizer of some sort. They become experts in creating narratives, summarizing non-fiction material, writing responses to literature, report writing, evaluation essays, poetry writing and even friendly letters. The writing process is carefully followed and ends at the publishing stage where each 5th grade student arrives to the "Author's" chair and shares his/her work.
The reading program includes reading from the textbook and the core literature selected by the district. The students also are read to 30 minutes per week and are encouraged to take Accelerated Reading tests after each selection is read. Every Thursday is Literature Circle Day. The students are placed in groups arranged by a book they have selected. They read the selection then discuss themes, characters, or plot within their literature circles. This allows the students to orally present their views and develop great listening skills as well. This is an enriching experience and helps to bring the literature to life. This will aid the 5th grade students when they participate in Public Speaking and have a 3-5 minute presentation to prepare.
The Math program consists of EveryDay Math instruction, warm-ups with whiteboard work, math games and practice of basic skills. The students are encouraged to work at their own pace and are allowed to move ahead if they are compelled to do so. This is also supported by SuccessMaker twice a week.
All students will be participating in Glenwood's Science Fair creating Rube Goldberg projects and/or projects following the traditional Scientific Method.
The music program at Glenwood supports the 5th grade end of the year performance and our once a month art program is sponsored by a retired CVUSD teacher. The 5th grade year is an eventful year and a year where the student is allowed to grow and prepare for middle school. The year ends with a celebration at the 5th grade Culmination.
